Mechanical Properties and Toughening Mechanisms of Promising Zr-Y-Ta-O Composite Ceramics

ZrO2-YO1.5-TaO2.5 (ZYTO) composite ceramics are considered to be a candidate for next-generation thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) due their excellent stability and low conductivity in high temperatures; however, the mechanical properties fracture toughness of ZYTO system may shortcomings compared with 7-8YSZ: traditional TBC. In this study, were successfully prepared by chemical coprecipitation reaction, microstructure resulting composites was studied as function doping M-YTaO4. Mechanical properties, including density, porosity, hardness Young’s modulus, all determinate; toughening mechanism verified crack growth behavior Vickers indentation test. The results suggest that M-YTaO4 refined fluorite phase grain strengthened interface ceramic. mismatch between second matrix produced residual stress bulk affected propagation behavior. With increase doping, coarsening ferroelastic domains observed experiments. orthogonal polarization directions near tip evidenced mechanism. competition among these behaviors, such deflection, bridging bifurcation, dominated actual composite. best formula determined two-phase region, highest about 42 J/m2, which very close 7-8YSZ’s 45 ± 5 J/m2.
